Project Overview

Focused on leveraging the new brand identity of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), the project aimed to design and develop an engaging, accessible, and vibrant website. The objective was to authentically showcase the cultural resurgence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through a website that embodies simplicity, clarity, and the essence of AIATSIS's identity.

Exploration

During exploration, workshops were conducted to define what the brand represents and what it does not. The goal was to understand the new brand identity and its messages, using low-fi sketches to explore ways to integrate the brand into a digital website that reflects the essence of AIATSIS.

User interface

The UI package encompassed design foundations, global shell, grids, and essential brand principles. It served as the single source of truth containing all components and brand elements for internal team use, client presentations, and final handover to developers. Each section of the website was crafted to guide users through a journey of exploration and discovery, ensuring clear purpose and intuitive navigation.

Interface Design

The interface design for AIATSIS integrated brand patterns, typography, imagery, and vibrant colours to create a cohesive and distinctive visual experience. It focused on highlighting Indigenous content and voices, simplifying the user experience, and ensuring a clear brand aesthetic. This approach effectively showcases AIATSIS’s rich collection of content in an accessible and engaging manner, enhancing both written and visual materials for user exploration.

Outcome

Analytics showed significant increases in website traffic, establishing the AIATSIS site as a trusted source of information. Since launch, user numbers have risen by 8.5%, with a 44% increase in unique visits to the 'Explore' section. Our collaboration with AIATSIS and 33 Creative received a Gold Award in Digital Design at the 2021 Australian Good Design Awards.
